The installation of tensioned access platform safety netting under Ryde Pier has become a significant milestone for our team. This project, completed in partnership with Octavius Infrastructure Limited for Network Rail, showcases our commitment to providing award-winning solutions. Project Overview
The installation took place between August 2024 and May 2025, focusing on spans 12 to 56 of Ryde Pier on the scenic Isle of Wight. Given the complexities involved, our team used a combination of work boats, pontoons, and towers to ensure safe and efficient access for the required remedial work on the railway lines.
Scope of Works
The scope of this project included installing and later removing tensioned access platform safety netting (TAP nets) under selected spans. This was developed after extensive discussions with manufacturers, designers, engineers & the client.
Evidence of Project Excellence
From the start, our commitment to excellence was clear. Close collaboration with IRC Nets & Ropes and Tensys Specialist Engineering Consultancy helped facilitate swift approval processes and thorough assessments of both materials and methods.
We conducted rigorous laboratory testing to confirm the durability of our design. This ensured that materials and designs received approval not just from our team but also from Richter Global and Network Rail.
Our efforts resulted in a test rig that demonstrated performance exceeding expected standards. Additionally, we scored 100% in the Considerate Constructors Scheme assessment, reflecting our commitment to community impact and operational excellence.
Health and Safety Performance
Health and safety were crucial in this project. We implemented dynamic Point Of Work Risk Assessments (POWRAs) and created comprehensive Work Package Plans (WPP) along with detailed Task Briefing Sheets (TBS).
Our approach included developing specific rescue plans, consulting marine specialists, and equipping all operatives with specially designed life jackets. This proactive stance not only safeguarded our team but also raised our operational standards considerably.

Our project featured several innovative techniques during the Tensioned Access Platform installation. By utilising high quality materials, developing new access techniques & getting our TAP system designed and approved by engineers, we set new benchmarks in FASET standards.
Additionally, our commitment to sustainable practices was evident throughout the project. We reduced waste considerably when compared to previous schemes that would have utilised scaffolding to produce a similar platform. Saving on material transport, waste, operative travel as well as significantly reducing the project programme.
